The new year is a great time to embrace change. Many people start by picking a New Year's resolution, but how many of us actually stick to them?

Instead, try setting intentions for the year to come. To learn, be mindful, spend time with loved ones, be observant, and discover what really lights your soul on fire.

1. Forget what society says is right

Most of us go to school and take jobs that we don't like so we can settle down and accumulate things that we don't need. Just because society says we should live this way!

The truth is, the best things in life can't be dictated by society. Only you know what is right for you. Don't be afraid to stray from what is familiar if you think it will bring you true meaning and fulfillment.

2. Embrace your fear

Finding the courage to chase your wildest dreams is scary. Chances are you fear embarrassment and failure, but you lose so much more by not trying.

Imagine how great it will feel to reach your goals. Train yourself to visualize what can go right in situations instead of what might go wrong.

3. Examine your relationships

Are the people you spend your time with holding you back or encouraging you to be the best you can be? Are your relationships deep or superficial?

Notice the people who cheer for you when you are doing well and stick around when things are rocky. Those are the people you should cherish most in life.

4. Find what brings you joy

Life is meant to be lived. We're not going to look back on life when we're older and wish we had watched more TV.

Get out there, connect with people, spend time in nature, and try new things. You might discover a new hobby, interest, or passion that you didn't know existed before.

5. Put down your electronics

Technology educates and entertains us, but too much technology can have a negative impact on our health, relationships, and self-image.

Make 2017 your year by following the steps outlined in this guide. Try new things, nurture relationships, and do a little soul searching to find deeper meaning in life, and see what a difference it makes!
